Good evening!

Last week’s news on a Monday! Lets go…

Here’s what happened in our favorite city this week:

Police Seeking Middle-Aged Suspect in Artist’s Murder

Berlin police Sunday said they were looking for an older man seen leaping from the apartment of a 41-year-old artist’s apartment shortly before it went up in flames. The victim’s body was discovered by firefighters … MORE

Xberg’s Filou Bakery Wins New Lease

It’s a rare victory over gentrification: Neighborhood bakery Filou won a new three-year lease from its London landlords after protests decried the eatery’s eviction as the latest sign of heartless investors … Radio Spätkauf has the story

Yet Another Liquid Attack on a Woman

A sixth acid attack on a woman in Berlin has given police a better description of the assailant and did no harm to the victim (thank heavens). The Local has the story.

Speaking of Gentrification…

The NYT has a piece on what Berlin is and isn’t doing to battle gentrification. Too little too late seems to be the tenor — but maybe that’s my own bias. Linky linky.

Hertha Player Gets AfD Photo Deleted

Bundesliga team Hertha successfully sued to halt the AfD political party from using a photo of one of its politicians with top scorer Marvin Plattenhardt. The player thought he was taking a picture with a fan, not a dubious politician. The Guardian has the story (before the injunction was granted)

Cops Confiscate Coconut Cannon

The story’s a bit older but still great: Berlin police made an early-morning raid to seize a coconut cannon March 2. The weapon is actually artwork and is intended for the Antarctic Biennale on now. No word on if the artist got the gun back … MORE

Jewish Food Week in Berlin

It looks like it’s little more than an idea but it’s a pretty good one at that: Nosh Berlin, a Jewish food week. Wonder if Jewish Week at McDonald’s could also become a thing like Mexikanische Woche … Story at the Jewish Chronicle

Sportsball: Union, Turbine & Eisbären

OK, Union are playing right now but I’m psyched they might make it to the Big Leagues. Turbine’s back and still atop the women’s Bundesliga and the Eisbären might even make it to the semis … MORE

Blogging: Let Them Eat Cake – German Cafe Culture

Order cake at the counter and get a slip of paper you give to your waitress when you order your coffee. Prussian order with baroque frosting … MORE
