The Polizei was busy at Alexanderplatz Friday, Feb. 3, after a topless man, a bomb scare and a celebrity appearance plunged the popular square and transit hub in Mitte into chaos.
At 3 p.m. the police responded to the square after a topless man climbed onto the Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft (Fountain of International Friendship) near Kaufhof, according to the Tagesspiegel. The Berliner Morgenpost has a good slideshow.
The police cleared the area and the subject reportedly left his post atop the fountain half an hour later. He was transported to the hospital.
About the same time, the federal police discovered an unattended bag in the main hall of the Alexanderplatz station, leading the police to seal off that building and halt all rail traffic, the paper reported.
Upon inspection the baggage only contained what most baggage contains — clothes. The station was re-opened at 5:20 p.m.
But alle guten Dinge sind drei (good stuff comes in threes), and the police were forced to break up an unexpected group of about 200 rap fans who arrived suddenly about 4.20 p.m. at the adjacent Alexa Media Markt. The group was there to see rapper Capital Bra.
Four participants were arrested after a fight broke out, according to Berliner Zeitung. The store closed its doors temporarily as the gathering turned into bedlam.
